Something To Live For

Brad's family was here over the weekend and they are one competitive bunch. Everything from who can lift the most bricks to who can flick a dice the farthest becomes a competition and it's hilarious to watch. Brad and his brother Matt are like a Laurel and Hardy routine on crack when they're together and we all had a good time watching them try and out-do one another.

And then we played Yahtzee.

Matt had forgotten the rules of Yahtzee and so while we explained them to him, Brad continually made comments like "you have better odds if you do this than that," or "the odds of you getting that roll are 1 in 8,000, so you'd be better to____." I never knew he was so passionate about the game of Yahtzee or that he had spent so much time calculating the odds of different roll combinations. Another fascinating fact about my hubby.

Half-way through the first game, Brad rolls the dice and gets (can you believe it!?!) a YAHTZEE on his very first roll. Five shiny twos came rolling out of his hand and you would have thought he'd won the lottery.

"Hooooollllllyyyyyyy Coooowwwww!!!!!!!!!!" he yelled in slow motion. Over and over again. He whoopped, he hollered, he grinned like the Grinch at Christmas. He was so happy. I mean, the odds of that and all......

Now I'm all for a rousing game of Yahtzee. I enjoy the thrill of the roll and the agongy of not getting that blasted full house that you so desperately need and instead having to take a lousy Chance with few points. It's a good time. But watching these two play you'd of thought they were sitting at the Final Table in the World Championship Texas Hold 'Em Table. Like there really was a lot at stake. Money on the line. Cash in the bank. Or just the title of The One Roll Yahtzee Champion of the Universe.

All that excitement does make playing games with them a whole lot of fun. And seriously, the odds....

Sometimes, you need a little unexpected yahtzee to keep ya goin'.

I admire the passion that Brad and his brother put into the game. I think that makes games a lot more fun- when it feels like life or death is on the line!

I have a computer version- so I can play even if no one else wants to!

Mitch's fam plays all the time too. Not much of a yahtzee player myself, but pretty competitive at other games.

I'm with Nan, but I got a kick out of reading about Brad's enthusiasm for the game!

I'm probably the least competitive person when it comes to board games, unless it is scrabble and my hubby is trying to make up words to beat me.
