Tender Mercies

I woke up this morning a big ball of nervous energy. This evening, Brad and I will pack up little Austin and head to Children's Hospital for his first surgery tomorrow morning. It is time for the Big! Hairy! Mole! to come off and while I'm thrilled that it's only a mole (or congenital mylanocytic nevus if you want to be fancy) that is sending us to Children's, I am still an ooey gooey mama who is scared for her little one. I know, I know everything will be okay but the thought of needles and scalpels and anesthesia coming at my babe causes the tears to well up and my breath to quicken.

Lucikly, Austin will be in the hands of the head of plastic surgery at Children's tomorrow which I am finding great comfort in. He is a wonderful man who spent a lot of time with me going over what to expect, wound care and the size and shape of the scar. He promised to do his best in the scar department and I said really? Compared to Big! Hairy! Mole! a scar, however long, will be delightful.

While this procedure, at this point, is technically considered cosmetic, his nevus does have to come off as the liklihood of it becoming cancerous at some point in his life is extremely high. And the nature of the nevus is such that it will continue to grow as Austin grows and has already spread it's borders more than they would like. His is also a bit atypical because it contains a large fleshy mound in the middle and while the doctor doesn't think it's cancerous yet, we won't know for sure until we hear back from pathology. The good doctor's plan for tomorrow is to get the majority of the lesion off while leaving a small border that will have to be removed with a second surgery.

I am so thankful for good doctors. For hospitals who cater to children and make the process as easy as possible on anxious parents. For a large hairy mole that was graciously placed on my babe's right hip and not his beautiful face. For blessings and prayers and the warm thoughts of those who love us. For a surgery that will take place before my darling boy will ever remember.

I love you little man.

It's never easy seeing your precious, perfect babe sent off to surgery. We are so blessed to live in a time when there is such advanced medical care. And yes, the good news is that he doesn't know it's going to happen and won't remember anything. Take care and travel safe :)

Baby bums are the best!

He'll be back from surgery, healthy, smiling, and less one hairly mole before you know it! Take comfort knowing he's in very capable hands, has many prayers on his side, and he's a healthy little guy. I have no doubt he'll be just fine.

I love you and wish I could erase your worry. But that's what mom's are supposed to do, there's no way around it. Just try to relax and think happy thoughts!

Things such as this are a little nervewracking on a mother, but you are right, Austin is in good hands. Be comforted, everything will go smoothly.

Sending my child into surgery to be anesthetized was one of the scariest moments of my life, but you go in knowing they are in good hands. Think good thoughts and try to be calm so Austin will feel that energy. I will be thinking of all of you!

You and your little man will be on my mind and in my prayers. Speedy recovery for your little Angel:)

On a different note, I noticed Jacob's team played Spencer's team on Saturday. I was trying to keep my girls in line and never made it over to you. I thought I saw Spencer's name on th AA Roster. I would love to hear the story of the "rough start" and the switch of teams. We too had some bumps before the season started.

Karen, I know that feeling as a mom and it is awful, but tender mercies are for real and when you look back you will see them throughout the whole process. Our littlest one had a heart murmer fixed up in Spokane. We had a wonderful experience up there. They take care of mom and dad just as well as the little ones. Good luck with everything, and you guys are in my prayers.
